If you’re looking to satisfy your adventurous spirit, the area around Sozopol offers some fascinating sights. While the resort is a favorite destination for beach lovers and vacationers, there’s more to discover—especially during the magical summer months.
Old Town Sozopol
Many Bulgarian towns are divided into old and new parts, but did you know that Sozopol is the oldest town along our Black Sea coast? The first settlement dates back to the end of the 6th millennium BC. Since then, the different peoples who have inhabited the area have only enriched its history.
The Town of Chernomorets
Modern-day Chernomorets was once known as the village of Sveti Nikola. The name was changed during the communist era due to attitudes toward religion. The area’s rich history is evidenced by the early Byzantine fortress of Akra and the one located on Chrysosotira Peninsula.
The Castle in Ravadinovo
This privately owned castle is a fairytale attraction ideal for family outings. It is located in a stunning park filled with thousands of exotic trees, plants, and flowers. On-site, you’ll also find several deep freshwater lakes home to fish and waterfowl—including white and black swans, pelicans, and ducks.
Begliktash
To experience sacred sites from prehistoric civilizations, you’ll need to travel a bit farther—about 30 km from Sozopol. Begliktash is one of the largest megalithic Thracian sanctuaries in Bulgaria. Cultural tourism related to the site has only started to develop in the past 20 years.
Ropotamo Nature Reserve
Among the notable landmarks near Sozopol is the Ropotamo Nature Reserve—home to over 200 bird species and many other animals. The park is located just 17 km from Sozopol, around a 15-minute drive, and can easily be combined with a visit to Begliktash.
Strandzha Mountain
Located east of Sozopol, Strandzha Mountain is a natural park rich in unique flora and fauna. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views, go hiking, and encounter a wide variety of wildlife.
